Touch screen is great on Win 8; firmware has been updated. No I know Win 8 is not so great but it's a start.

Typing is fast. I have never typed so fast on a computer; the keyboard is great.
The viewing angels are average and it's easy to install (a must have) SSD.
It's very light. The battery life lasts about 4.5 hours which is fine for me.
I don't need the optical drive so I replace it with a 9.5mm 2.5" SATA 2nd HDD Hard Driver Caddy in place for the DVD Optical Bay so I have 1 HDD, 1 SSD, and 1 MSSD.

Josie Jo (Faribault MN):I have had the laptop for two weeks, and it works excellent. Powerful, fast and Windows 8 is really not that bad.
The laptop is thin and light. The aluminum body is excellent looking and appears to be durable. The hinge is full length which I prefer for durability. Screen resolution is excellent. Touch screen works well, but you don't need to use it if you don't want. Battery life is about 4 plus hours on standard settings.

 J. Pitts (Spring Valley, CA USA) :I've been buying computers since the mid-1980s. I bought the Sony VAIO about a year ago to replace a desktop computer. I liked the idea of the touchscreen and I thought I might as well upgrade to Windows 8 while I was at it. I have been sorry ever since. The touchpad/screen is too sensitive and none of the adjustments I've made have had any effect or created an improvement. The DVD device didn't read a CD. The wi-fi, which had been working, suddenly stopped. The list goes on and I'm very dissatisfied. I have an easier time with my old Dell laptop running XP - it's easy to troubleshoot and fix. I just wanted to warn people that this isn't the best choice.

 Bchaseski (Northeast) :I purchased the Core i5 model with 500gb hard drive with touch. I've been using this Ultrabook for about a week and here are my observations. I'm a software developer and am used to very heavy 17" notebooks with quad-core processors, a dedicated video card, screaming SSD drives and tons of memory, so this is a huge departure from my 'norm'.

The size and weight are very good. Battery life seems to be just about at 5 hours with casual web surfing and a couple of 30 minute streaming videos from Hulu Plus. The processor (Core i5-xxxx) is fast and the combination of the mechanical 500GB hard drive and the 32gb SSD caching drive provide a fast experience. I looked into replacing both with a single 256GB SSD drive I had lying around and it is important to note that the 2.5" drive bay in this is the slim-height kind (7mm). I figured this would be the case so I'm not deducting any stars for that, but it is important to note in case you think you can upgrade it with any old SSD drive. That being said, it is going to cost about $200 more for a compatible SSD drive and that would bump the price up to what it would've cost for a core i7 model with 8gb of ram and a 256gb hard drive pre-installed. I definitely wish I had realized that first as I would've bought that model instead!

yamaharidr:I was skeptical of the i3 processor, but it has worked flawlessly so far. But after finding out that it was a 3rd gen and a dual core, I felt more secure. I usually have at least four or so tabs open at once. Loading facebook, playing videos off youtube, having multiple tabs for homework, and running couple apps, while on the charger and with full brightness. I am happy to say that I have noticed no speed problems or lag, even with multiple youtube videos playing at once and a few other tabs open too. I havnt tried any photo or video editing or 3D games, but I probably will in the near future. But to be fair, this laptop isnt made for gamers anyway. Also, I havnt experienced any heating problems yet, other than just slightly warm.

The trackpad is very easy to use, and It closely resembles that of one on a Mac Book. The multi touch is a big plus for me, for scrolling though web pages and such. But, this laptop truly shines with the touch screen. Windows 8 is basically made to be used with tablet, so I really diddnt want to upgrade unless I had a touch screen. But I will say, using Windows 8 on this touchscreen is an absolute blast! It's just plain fun to play with. Its basically like having a tablet with a full keyboard. The touch screen is by far my favorite feature, and I have had no problems with it yet.

 Eric Carson (Cushing, OK) : This computer contains more than enough horsepower for most home computing tasks (save PC gaming, but come on, get a console and game on that). This is essentially a low voltage Core i5 laptop bolted onto a 20" glass monitor.

Full disclosure - I replaced the spinning hard drive (5400 RPM is terrible performance) with an Intel SSD (the 330 series 160GB). My family keeps our media on a separate network-attached server, so we don't have need of much storage on the home PC, so this solution works best for us. After switching out, we are getting almost 5 hours of battery life, which is very good for the size of the display.

Long Time Amazon Customer (USA):I have been in computing for my entire career (35+ years) outside a stint in the military. I have watched as computers continually shrunk while their power has continually increased. I still clung to the notion of a minitower as the basic unit of computing - until this arrived - i was able to clear a mid size tower out of my bedroom and take up less space with this unit than my previous monitor.

It is every bit as functional - indeed it is speedier than the older tower was. Very solid build - not something you would normally disconnect and trek with you through your house - but with a built in battery (that supposedly lasts 2-3 hours) this unit can be picked up and transported to show visitors or other people things you want them to see - without their need to trek into my bedroom. Very solid build, and very snappy performance - although serious gamers might not be satisfied - needing that millisecond advantage on their opponents.

Sony provided usb ports, etc. that are eminently useable and this unit can be expanded with peripherals (not quite to the extent of a minitower with expansion slots) - but certainly more expandable than most people would want or need. Five stars for build quality and performance. Five stars to amazon - fast delivery and decent price.

For a while I wanted a computer in the kitchen so that I could use epicurious and listen to music while cooking. When Christmas came around and my wife got me this Sony VAIO Tap All-in-One 20 inch Touchscreen, I have to say I was very disappointed. I had been eyeing the vizio all-in-ones. For example:

Nobody:I wanted a new computer with Windows 7 but none could be found, so I settled for this one. I like the looks of it and the weight, but I have zero interest in using Microsoft's tile desktop. To avoid it, all you have to do is hit the Windows button on the keyboard and you'll have what looks pretty much like a Windows 7 desktop. That increased my comfort level considerably.

However, the touch pad has a mind of its own. When typing, I must be swiping the touch pad because windows keep re-sizing themselves. Very frustrating. Speaking of sizing, I don't know whose eyes can see the default font size. I just know for sure it's not my eyes. I've had to go through all my bookmarks, boosting the display to 120% or 133%.

Scrolling is a real pain. I intend to look for instructions on how to use the touch pad with more skill. Everything I've done so far is just following all my learned habits with touch pads, which I've been using exclusively for many years. This touch pad is like nothing I've ever used before. In addition to the scrolling headache, just plain clicking is different. You have to be in the upper center part of the touch pad for the computer to respond.

 Mario Fernandez Ulloa (MIAMI, FLORIDA USA) :The velocity of the WiFi is an issue. My five years Toshiba Satellite works better. It seems that above 100 ft. the signal is lost. UP TO DATE NEWS!! I took my Vaio to the Sony Store at Escazu Costa Rica. After the technician installed some drivers the laptop kept worked bad. They gave me other Laptop and it has been working pretty well with signal strenght. I am grateful that I didn t buy the laptop by internet!!

Nathan Cox"::It would be a great laptop if it would stay connected to wifi. After about 2 months I need to disconnect and reconnect after every time I open it, and about every 10-15 min. The laptop thinks it is connected to the internet but its really not, something to do with this model having faulty wireless cards. The only fix I've seen is to replace the card on your own dime.

ester :This is a very nice little computer. Beforeit I had a mini HP pink and I always loved small laptops. My last laptop worked for 2 years and still working but battery is not charging anymore. Instead get a new battery I though would be nice after 2 years buying a new laptop and I choose this one. Its a great computer, has windows 8 which Im still learning how to use it, and works great. Doesnt not have cd/dvd but my last one didnt have either, for me is not a big deal. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because the battery...I would charge the computer all night long and battery life is only 3-4 hours without being plugged...my last computer would stay all day with battery no needed charge. That is only my concern. But I guess the description is right so maybe is not a big deal for a lot ppl that may use the laptop plugged in the charge. My general experience with this little one is being great. I would recommend it for all ppl that is looking for a nice looking, good functional and very easy to carry out laptop!!! Thumbs up!!!

 R. Reitz :I bought this little Sony laptop as a replacement for my year old Acer Aspire One netbook. Although the Acer was conveniently lightweight and portable, I was never happy with its performance. Even after the recommended memory bump to 4 gb, the Acer left much to be desired. It had a good video card for a netbook but its processor was barely powerful enough to stream movies or surf the internet. On top of that the Acer's keyboard was uncomfortable to type on. I only mention these things because when shopping for a replacement I didn't want to choose one with the same shortcomings. I'm happy to report that despite what appears to be only a modest improvements in the specs over the Acer Aspire One, for me, this Vaio is everything that the Acer wasn't. In my opinion Sony did an excellent job of putting together a lightweight and powerful netbook alternative. This Vaio's 11.6 inch screen has a native resolution of 1366 x 768 (720p) and combined with its dedicated AMD HD 7340M graphics card provides a bright clear picture for web surfing or streaming movies and while it is not a gaming machine you will be able to play games such as WOW and LoTR Online at low settings. Overall the capabilities of this compact laptop greatly surpass those of a simple netbook. Folks with bigger hands will generally find the keyboards on most 11.6 inch laptops cramped but I found this Vaio's keyboard to be comfortable and one that made me think of more expensive laptop alternatives such as the Macbook Pro. Note: This Vaio's keyboard is NOT illuminated as described by another reviewer. For movie buffs, the HDMI out provided with this Vaio provides a smooth movie streaming experience.

eqtyanalyst (NYC):While the laptop looks great (aesthetics and awesome picture), a couple of design flaws make it tough to keep. The first problem is that the wrist rest area gets very hot; there doesn't seem to be any thermal insulation separating the surface and the CPU inside. Second, the wifi connection works intermittently. Never had this issue at home with my other computers. And I see from the Sony site that many others are experiencing this.

mir Vega (Orange Walk Town, Orange Walk District, BZ) :This is a very nice laptop. It looks and feels far more expensive that what it actually is. The boot time is around 10 seconds, which I must say I truly enjoy as I am now departing from my aging HP and Asus laptops. The backlit feature is great for low light or night time and the screen is great. The only complaint I would say it the bloatware that comes with it. I used the Sony Update feature to update all drivers and it made the keyboard unusable so I would say uninstall and be weary, trust updating from Windows Update only. although this is not the touchscreen version, the interface is very fluid, and even thought Windows 8 has that terrible learning curve, it is still a great laptop. I definately recommend this laptop as a "back to school" laptop as it has both the capacity to serve as a work and entertainment laptop. :-)

Richard Hanooman "Richard Hanooman" (Florida) :So far I'm still testing this, and getting use to it. I'm for one isn't a fan of Win8 buuuuuut I'll get use to it. Was going to install Win7 but couldn't get into the bios. Otherwise, it's a fast start up. Very fast. IMO I think the trackpad is a weird placement, and I miss the actual left click and right click button, takes awhile to get use too. Many adjustments.

The backlit keyboard doesn't have a brightness adjustment, I think. But it's not bad. It's not to bright, or to dark, its just right. I've been dealing with desktops for years and not had a laptop for a long time so I am still getting use to the keyboard and thats why I got the 10-key version. So far I'm still getting use to it and its not bad.

The screen does need to be adjusted for your viewing angle, soooo make sure you adjust it in the right position before you move it.

The sound quality is amazing!! Loud! Clear! Skyping right now and the voice is clear!

Homer :Bought for my wife and spent bit of time getting programs installed and getting her up to speed from XP to Windows 8, as it is a leap! Computer is functioning perfectly and the screen resolution is the best I've or she has experienced. Back lit keyboard works extremely well in reduced light situations. i5 core is fast and reliable. I am sure she will find much more to like about the computer as she works with it in the future.:

The first came and could not hold a charge. Returned and reordered thinking it was a glitch. NOPE. Second package arrives and it was banged up. The laptop was in a box barely bigger than it with a tiny amount of brown paper wrapped around tit. OK?? Seriously? A $800 laptop and your saving maybe $10 on packaging it correctly. The inside box was also banged up, so I knew I was in trouble. Sure enough the LCD is broken - the only way to get a clear, clean picture is to hold both sides of the screen with your hands. Only problem - how do you use your laptop if both hands are busy holding the screen. I am hot, livid, and never recommending AMAZON again!

Delta128m:Received this as a holiday gift, surprised it's preloaded for 64 bits Windows 8 core instead of Windows 7 that would be excellent for as shipped combo of 4GB DD3 memory, 750GB HDD (5,400 RPM drive is "slow") and used its automated recovery to reformat/restore C: drive / active partition just to be sure it's working. Surprised that Sony support already has downgrade directions and Windows 7 drivers for this newly released model as I believe many seasoned users will eventually downgrade. PLEASE make sure you save/keep the recovery partition and backup your Windows 8 license as it does NOT come with a MS Sticker so that you can re-install it later on. I hate the Metro interface on a non-touch screen and the touchpad is not very responsive so a mouse for scrolling is a must except when seated on a bus or economy airplane seat - go to cnet and download a free W8 "Start" menu to bring back that familiar startup, I opted to bypass & deactivate Metro so it's functioning like my other mix of Win7 desktops & laptop devices, fast & bootup/wake-from-sleep mode is fast, less than 40 seconds vs. 2 minutes for older Windows OS. The Apps are cute and designed to emulate iOS and Android widgets, preloaded games are fun but I plan to delete them to free up extra space, plan to use mostly 32 bits "programs" like MS Office 2010 instead of the Apps version. Video resolution is good enough for HD viewing on its 11.6" screen on the go with its 4+ hours playback time, enough for a transcon/coast-to-coast flight to watch my own preloaded DVD's or movies. The absence of DVD/CD drive isn't a big deal, owning 2 Dell's with optional drives for past 5 years and I haven't missed them on the go, most programs and apps/installations can be easilyy done via USB thumb drive.

 Danelle :I just received this laptop yesterday, thanks to amazons quick one day shipping! I was debating on if I should pay the extra money for the touchscreen or not. I convinced myself that it was necessary and went ahead and ordered this one... The laptop is great! Very quiet, runs smooth! This version is very basic so it is not the fastest laptop around, but fast enough for students or maybe a stay at home parent like myself who goes to school online. The backlit keyboard is now an important part in my laptop life because it allows me to type at night with ease without having to hunch over to see the keys. Now the real stuff! Windows 8 is absolutely horrible... I hate this system, and I consider myself a little tech savy! The lack of a touchscreen makes it difficult to navigate around those darn tickers, and many times I have found myself stuck in the camera or something with no way out cause there isn't an x button and esc does not work either. So I will probably return this for the added touchscreen. But if you can get past the lack of a touchscreen for windows 8, you will really like this laptop! I think it's a winner well minus windows 8!

I was afraid that if I had access to a computer elsewhere (on the couch, for example), I'd never leave computing and the Internet behind--and I'm fast discovering there is a certain amount of truth in that. I've only had this Sony laptop for a month and I'm already getting addicted to having a go-anywhere computer.

The Lunar Staff "Moonlight Entertainment & Sales" (Hee Haw Land, KS):Right out of the box, we pushed the power button, but it did not come on... so there was no precharged battery installed. We plugged it in and it powered right up. It took about 10 minutes total to get it registered, which went fairly smooth. However, in order to register this laptop, you are required to set-up a Microsoft account. Without it, you won't be able to move on. Just a warning if you have a thing about privacy issues, because they want a primary email to register the account with Microsoft, plus two additional ways to verify and communicate with you: an alternate email address and phone number, plus your: d.o.b., name, etc... After the initial set-up you can use the computer directly, to surf the web.

Ross:I really like this machine. I was in the market for a new laptop for some time an decided a touchscreen would best serve my purpose. I'm an artist so working with the touch is a dream come true.
I wasn't sure about windows 8 when it came out but after playing with it for a while decided it was in fact a good OS. Just different. I can see where it isn't optimal for a business but it suites my needs.
But don't let windows 8 turn you away from a good quality computer. There is a program that will allow you to use Windows 8 like Windows 7, Vista, XP, or even 98! And it's free to boot! Just look up in any search engine Classic Shell and you'll find it. Classicshell.net.

jwatson :Let me start by saying that I am a computer technician, and was looking for a touchscreen laptop that was fast out of the box. This VAIO hit the mark. It has a fast processor, fast RAM, and a semi-fast hard drive. Out of the box, booted up in about 15 seconds (after the initial setup).

Now day 1 after getting it set up and configured the way I like, I replaced the hard drive with a solid state drive - Kingston's 120GB HyperX drive - extremely fast. I cloned the hard drive to the SSD, and was able to boot up in less than 7 seconds with Windows 8 - just what I was hoping for.

All and all, this laptop is a must have if you are looking for fast, and touchsreen. Yes, it does pick up fingerprints, but I put a screen protector on it, and it reduced the glare, and keeps away those prints. So don't let the other reviewers steer you wrong, as this is a sure fire speed deamon, especially if you plan on installing a SSD.
